GIZ invites suitable candidates to apply to participate in a train-the-trainer event

GIZ invites suitable candidates to apply to participate in a train-the-trainer event on Green Hydrogen and PtX in Berlin in January 2022.

The training is implemented by H2.SA, a Green Hydrogen programme implemented by GIZ on behalf of the BMZ. The International PtX Hub, in turn, is implemented by the GIZ on behalf of the BMU.

The International PtX Hub in Berlin was established in anticipation of the increasingly important role of green hydrogen in the global energy economy. The Hub developed a comprehensive training course on the entire H2 and PtX value chain with the aim of preparing participants to realistically assess the potential for the production, application and, if necessary, export of green H2 & PtX. Green hydrogen programmes are being implemented in Brazil, Chile, Morocco, and South Africa. To be able to offer the training course in each country, GIZ would like to build the capacity of local trainers to roll out the training to local audiences. For more information on the content of PtX Hub’s training course, CLICK HERE.

The train-the-trainer course will take place in Berlin from 24 - 29 January 2022. The exact dates will still be confirmed as field visits are planned after or before the actual training takes place. The vision is that the participants will become trainers in their respective countries, capable of delivering both the actual training course as well as future train-the-trainer courses, if required.
Energy Storage technologies will unlock a “new gold rush” for South Africa

The central question at a recently convened workshop by the South African National Energy Association (SANEA) on Energy Storage was how to use growth in energy storage to enable a “new gold rush” with all the socio-economic and environmental benefits
it will bring. The workshop was attended by energy experts, government, and industry leaders. Investing in energy storage technologies, especially battery storage and clean molecules such as green hydrogen, is key to unlocking new opportunities,
investment and jobs in South Africa’s energy sector and will build on South Africa’s immense natural resources including metals, minerals, solar and wind power potential for renewable energy.

Kiren Maharaj, Chair of the SANEA Board opened the workshop by saying “Energy storage is a unique opportunity for South Africa and can bring multiple benefits to our economy, our environment and our people. Promotion of the energy storage ecosystem
can therefore also play a critical role in post Covid-19 economic stimulus plans”.

Workshop participants heard that global investments into energy storage are expected to be worth USD50-100 billion by 2025 and more than USD 660 billion by 2040. Currently most of these investments are earmarked for destinations such as the US, China
and the EU. South Africa and Africa at large are under-represented as investment destinations, despite being the source of key metals and minerals that form the basis of battery storage technologies and new value chains capable of producing green
hydrogen at scale. South Africa has abundant reserves of metals and minerals such as manganese, vanadium and the platinum group metals that are key components of renewable energy and battery storage technologies; South Africa alone accounts
for over 75[1]% of global platinum group metals reserves. South Africa also has vast, relatively untapped endowments of solar and wind power potential and unused land that could be used for renewable power generation. Mikhail Nikomarov Chair of
the South African Energy Storage Association (SAESA)msaid “South Africa has a natural competitive advantage in a world where the energy transition is already happening and some perceived negative trends such as the exchange rate, can be seen as
        opportunities to heighten this advantage.”

Government was encouraged to provide local and international investors with policy certainty and regulatory frameworks and tools including incentives, that will encourage long term investment. It was acknowledged that some policy certainty of South
Africa’s future energy pathway is provided by the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) 2019 which has outlined a future energy trajectory that integrates more solar and wind power into the national power generation mix. As more renewables are integrated
into the energy mix however, there will be greater local demand for storage. One of the key recommendations emerging from the workshop was therefore that energy storage needs to feature more prominently in the IRP and be included in the next round
of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement (REIPPP) Programme.

It was highlighted that business and government will need to continue to fund R&D and business should continue to invest in energy storage projects. This will require new levels of collaboration and strategic partnerships and between government,
higher education institutions, and industry. It was recommended that an industry and government forum be formed that would initially have the task of outlining a common vision for the energy storage technology sector in South Africa and ultimately
developing an implementation plan, as well as a national innovation ecosystem (NIE). Cosmas Chiteme from the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) confirmed that this had begun stating “A consortium of local universities, science councils
and the private sector is being put in place as part of a broader Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) roadmap.”

A key issue that was a cross cutting theme for the day, was that a just energy transition that includes energy storage technologies must be inclusive. This requires enabling all sectors of society and the economy to benefit including women, young
people, and workers whose jobs are at risk under future low-carbon energy scenarios. Skills development initiatives must also therefore ensure that no one is left behind and that a green energy skills pipeline is developed to meet the needs of
this growing sector. Localisation of the battery storage industry and commercial production of clean molecules was identified as being critical in supporting a just transition.

The key message emerging from the discussions was therefore that South Africa should, “Be bold, start soon, fail fast, and learn quickly.” It was agreed that, brave and visionary leadership is needed from all sectors of the economy to create a common
vision and a roadmap for how South Africa can become a frontrunner and eventually a net exporter of energy storage technologies to meet global demand. A misalignment of key stakeholders was identified as being a key barrier. Joanne Yawitch,
CEO of the National Business Initiative highlighted the importance of aligned, courageous leadership saying: “We need to speak truth to power to achieve a country vision of a diversified energy economy and thriving local value chain.”

SANEA has set up an impact community for these discussions to explore how to deepen implementation to drive the realisation of these opportunities for South Africa. A full set of recommendations on how to do this and as an outcome from the workshop,
is available on the SANEA website.
